during learning community forum (LCF), one of the student said that question that had been ask in the final exam doesn't similar with what had we studied in lecture. so my statistic lecturer, Mr Kiru comment on it. and i think Mr Kiru was absolutely correct. this is speech of Mr Kiru that i had recorded.
anything that you can't do in first attempt, you will try in second attemp. thats how we learning. i don't want average student. i don't want mean. i want above mean. thats assesment, you have to learn this. this is a part of university. forget about what do you learn in school. the process you have to learn is independent learning. you are given the second opportunity. i want you to 'think'. when final exam, i will give you 1 question for you to think. for calculus, the percentage of failure is 18%. in exam board meeting, they said 'we must do something'. i just smile and said 'you don't need to do anything about it. let the student sit for second attemp. for second attemp, they will learn, they will pass the mark. why are we adjusting the result just to satisfy student.' you are not going to learn if i adjust adjust adjust the result. thats what happen in SPM, they adjust adjust adjust the result. thats what you have now. you want the truth reflection of your result? your trial result. SPM result is adjusted mark, modified mark. in trial you just get 5A, in actual SPM got 9A. you also cannot believe it. forget whatever in the school, forget in the sense of system that you went through. forget about that. when you go to under graduate, erase whatever you expected to happen in foundation will happen in undergraduate. in undergraduate, you need to be independent. don't know anything, go to library and search, get reference book, read up, understand. still don't understand, put a question mark, fix a appoinment, go see the lecture. then you will appreciate the process of learning. i'm telling you because i'm the educationist, thats how i look at it, thats how i expected the student to be. almost 10 thousand people are jobless. if you can 'think', you know what to do. you know how to search for a job. you won't be jobless. the moment you are 'follower', you are jobless. thats how you learn. learning in the sense of knowledge, not the sense of exam. exam doesn't take you anywhere nowadays. knowledge takes u beyond limits.
i feel something when he said about 'follower' and 'think'. i question myself, did i really study and 'think'? or did i just study and remember for the exam. so that i will forgot all the thing that i had been study for the past semester. thats why many graduate are jobless, because they just remember what they learn, not more than that. are we like that?
